Little white lumps on skin: what they may mean

A tiny, firm, pearly bump may be a keratin-filled cyst such as milia, while a sore, warm lump can reflect inflammation or a boil. A lump that is shiny, crusted, repeatedly bleeding, or slow to heal needs a clinician's opinion because some skin cancers can appear in subtle ways. The appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Notice whether the surface is smooth or scaly, whether the lump moves under gentle pressure, and whether nearby skin is red. Record when it appeared and whether new products, shaving, friction, or an injury preceded it. These details help distinguish a surface blockage from a deeper lesion.

Wash gently with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser, then avoid squeezing, piercing, or scraping the lump. Manipulation can introduce bacteria, worsen swelling, and leave a mark. Use non-comedogenic products if several bumps are forming, and pause any product that clearly irritates the area.

If the lump is painful and inflamed, a clean warm compress may be soothing. Do not apply steroid creams or attempt an injection without medical advice; treatment depends on the diagnosis. A dermatologist can examine persistent bumps and discuss removal or medication when appropriate.

Arrange an examination for a lump that persists, enlarges, changes colour or texture, bleeds, crusts, ulcerates, or returns after treatment. Seek prompt care for rapidly increasing redness, marked warmth, severe pain, pus, fever, or swelling near the eye. These features can signal infection or a lesion needing timely assessment.

Ask: Could this be a cyst, inflamed follicle, boil, or another growth? Should it be sampled or monitored? Which products or procedures should I avoid? What changes should prompt an earlier review?
