What should you know about little red dots rash?

Itch and dry scaling can occur with atopic dermatitis or contact dermatitis. Spots concentrated in warm, moist folds may fit heat rash or intertrigo. A ring-shaped patch with a scaly edge can suggest ringworm, while intense night-time itch or affected household contacts raises the possibility of scabies. Psoriasis may form more defined, scaly areas. A rash that starts soon after a new medicine needs medical review because drug rashes can vary in severity.

Record the start time, body areas involved, recent medicines, new soaps or fabrics, heat exposure, travel, and contact with anyone who is itchy. Avoid assuming the cause from colour alone.

Keep the skin cool and dry, wear loose clothing, and wash with a mild, fragrance-free cleanser. Stop newly introduced fragranced products until the cause is clearer. Avoid scratching; cool compresses and short nails can reduce skin damage. Do not use leftover prescription creams, especially steroid combinations, on an undiagnosed rash. If the rash follows a new medicine, contact the prescribing clinician promptly before making changes to essential treatment.

Get urgent help for a rash with trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, blistering, skin peeling, mouth or eye sores, severe illness, or fever. Prompt assessment is also needed when dots do not fade under pressure and you feel unwell, or when the rash spreads quickly. Book a dermatology review for a persistent, recurring, painful, or infected-looking rash.
