Little red bumps on hands and arms

Rough, tiny bumps on the outer upper arms are compatible with keratosis pilaris, whereas bumps around individual hairs after sweating, shaving, or friction can fit folliculitis. Bumps on the hands may instead reflect contact with soaps, gloves, metals, plants, or cleaning products. A clinician will look for scaling, cracks, blisters, pus, tenderness, and whether the palms or fingers are involved.

Rinse hands after exposure to suspected irritants, use a fragrance-free cleanser, and apply a thick plain moisturizer after washing. Wear protective gloves suited to the task, with a soft cotton layer if moisture or rubber seems irritating. Do not scratch, shave over inflamed follicles, or use abrasive exfoliation. If upper-arm roughness is the main issue, ask about a gentle keratolytic moisturizer rather than layering several products.

Get prompt medical care if the hand or arm becomes hot, increasingly painful, swollen, rapidly red, or drains pus, particularly with fever or reduced movement. Seek urgent help for sudden swelling with breathing difficulty. Arrange a routine review for persistent, recurrent, cracking, blistering, or unexplained bumps, especially when work or a product seems to trigger them.
