Little Lumps Under the Armpit

Armpit lymph nodes can become noticeable during an infection or inflammation in the arm, chest wall, or breast. Shaving irritation, an inflamed hair follicle, or a cyst can create a tender bump close to the skin. The number of lumps, their mobility, tenderness, and skin changes help a clinician decide what to examine next.

An armpit lump is not automatically breast cancer or lymphoma. These conditions are among the reasons a persistent, firm, enlarging, or unexplained lump may be investigated, alongside non-cancer causes.

Avoid squeezing the area and note whether the lumps change after a skin irritation or infection settles. Check for breast or chest changes such as a new thickened area, nipple change, or skin dimpling, without repeatedly pressing. Arrange an appointment if a lump persists, enlarges, feels fixed, or comes with other unexplained symptoms.

Seek urgent help for severe pain, rapidly spreading redness, high fever, or feeling seriously unwell. Arrange prompt review for an enlarging or hard lump, a new breast or nipple change, unexplained weight loss, persistent fever, or drenching night sweats. These signs require assessment but do not identify the cause on their own.
