What should you know about little hard bumps on skin?

Rough, uniform bumps on the upper arms or thighs can occur with [Keratosis Pilaris](/conditions/keratosis-pilaris/). Tiny pearly bumps, especially on the face, may be [Milia](/conditions/milia/), which contain trapped keratin. Red or tender bumps around hairs can occur with [Folliculitis](/conditions/folliculitis/), while sweating and occlusion may contribute to [Heat Rash](/conditions/heat-rash/). Flat-topped or violaceous bumps can have other causes, including [Lichen Planus](/conditions/lichen-planus/).

A photograph and touch description cannot replace examination. Note the body site, duration, itch, pain, scale, redness and whether the bumps are spreading or clustered. Do not assume that hardness identifies one condition.

Wash gently, reduce friction and avoid picking or scraping. Loose breathable clothing may help when heat or sweating is involved. A clinician may recommend a moisturising routine for rough follicular bumps or targeted treatment for inflammation.
