Little bumpy rash on the arm: causes and care

Dry, itchy patches can occur with atopic dermatitis. A rash that follows contact with a product, metal, plant, or fabric may be contact dermatitis. Small prickly bumps after sweating can fit heat rash. Ring-shaped scale may suggest ringworm, while intense itch that is worse at night or affects close contacts raises the possibility of scabies. Psoriasis, intertrigo, and a drug rash have different patterns and need clinical context.

Stop any newly introduced product on the area and rinse off a suspected irritant. Use lukewarm water, a fragrance-free cleanser, and a plain moisturiser. Keep the arm cool and avoid scratching, tight sleeves, and shared towels. Do not apply steroid, antifungal, or antibiotic creams without advice when the cause is unclear, because the wrong product can obscure the pattern or irritate the skin. Note recent medicines, exposures, travel, and whether anyone else is itchy.

Arrange an examination if the rash spreads, persists, recurs, becomes painful, forms blisters, oozes, or develops a ring or thick scale. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, widespread blistering, skin peeling, fever, or a rapidly worsening rash after a medicine. A clinician can decide whether testing or prescription treatment is needed.

Ask whether the rash looks more like dermatitis, infection, infestation, or psoriasis; whether a recent medicine could be involved; and which skin products are safe while the diagnosis is being clarified.
