Little bumps after shaving: what they may mean and what to do

Red, itchy bumps that follow shaving may be razor bumps, also called pseudofolliculitis barbae, when cut hairs curl back into the skin. A tender spot with pus can fit folliculitis. Small rough bumps that were present before shaving may be keratosis pilaris instead. An ingrown hair can be felt as a firm bump and may show a trapped hair beneath the surface.

Pause shaving the area until the tenderness and redness ease. Wash gently, avoid scrubbing or picking, and use a clean, cool compress for comfort. When you resume, soften the hair with warm water, use shaving gel, move the razor in the direction of hair growth, and avoid repeated passes. Use a clean, sharp razor and do not share it. A clinician can suggest treatment for persistent follicle inflammation; laser hair removal may be an option for recurring shaving-related problems.

Arrange medical advice if bumps keep returning, become increasingly painful, drain pus, spread, or leave dark marks or scars. Seek prompt care for rapidly worsening redness, marked swelling, fever, or feeling unwell. A clinician can distinguish folliculitis, razor bumps, and other skin conditions by examining the pattern.
