Short answer

A litmus paper test may change colour with alkaline fluid, but it cannot reliably confirm that your waters have broken.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why the test can mislead

Amniotic fluid can leak as a gush or as a slow, repeated trickle, and it may be difficult to distinguish from urine or normal vaginal discharge. Litmus paper reacts to acidity or alkalinity, but blood, semen, urine, infections, soaps, and other substances can affect the result. A colour change is therefore only a clue, not a diagnosis.

At a maternity unit, a clinician can ask about the fluid, examine you safely, and use appropriate tests to decide whether the membranes have ruptured. The timing of the suspected leak and your stage of pregnancy both affect the advice.

What to do now

If you think your waters may have broken, contact your maternity team promptly, even if the leak is small and you have no contractions. Note the time, colour, smell, and amount of fluid. Wear a clean sanitary pad rather than inserting anything into the vagina, and avoid sex or swimming until you have received advice.

Do not rely on repeated home tests to decide whether assessment is needed. Tell the team about contractions, bleeding, pain, fever, fetal movement, and any previous pregnancy concerns. A suspected leak before labour may be associated with Preterm Labour when it happens early in pregnancy.

When to seek urgent maternity care

Seek urgent maternity assessment for green, brown, or bloody fluid, fever, worsening abdominal pain, regular contractions, reduced fetal movement, or a feeling that something is protruding. If you are before term and notice fluid loss, do not wait for a home test result. Call emergency services if you are severely unwell, faint, or have heavy bleeding.

Questions for your maternity team

Ask: Could this be amniotic fluid? What examination or test will confirm it? Should I attend now, and where? How should I monitor fetal movement and temperature? What should I do if leaking continues or contractions begin?
