Treatment may involve a beta-lactam antibiotic, sometimes combined with another medicine, or an alternative when allergy or resistant bacteria is a concern. The choice can change after examination, chest imaging, blood tests, or microbiology results. Intravenous treatment is given when pneumonia is severe, swallowing is difficult, or absorption by mouth is unreliable. It is not a general-purpose list for self-treatment.

Seek medical assessment if pneumonia is suspected, especially with fever, cough, breathlessness, chest pain, or marked weakness. Tell the clinician about antibiotic allergies, recent antibiotics, pregnancy, kidney problems, and medicines you take. Do not use leftover antibiotics or ask for an IV drug by name. Take the prescribed course exactly as directed; improvement should be monitored rather than assumed.

Get urgent help for severe difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, inability to keep fluids down, or rapidly worsening symptoms. A person with pneumonia may need oxygen, fluids, monitoring, and tests alongside antibiotics. Children, older adults, pregnant people, and those with long-term heart or lung conditions may need prompt review even when symptoms seem moderate.

Ask which organism or pattern of infection is being considered, why IV treatment is appropriate, how kidney function affects dosing, what side effects require attention, and when a switch to tablets may be considered.
