Antibiotics for tonsillitis in adults

Tonsillitis can cause swollen tonsils, throat pain, fever, bad breath, and painful swallowing. Viral illness is common, while some cases involve bacteria. Cough, a runny nose, exposure history, examination findings, and your general health help guide the decision. The appearance of the tonsils alone cannot reliably identify the cause.

If bacterial infection is suspected, the prescriber considers allergies, previous reactions, pregnancy, kidney function, and other medicines before selecting treatment. A medicine used for Brucellosis or Helicobacter Pylori Infection is not automatically suitable for tonsillitis.

Rest, sip fluids, and choose labelled pain relief that is safe with your health conditions. Do not share antibiotics or use leftovers. If prescribed an antibiotic, take it according to the instructions and contact the prescriber about a rash, swelling, breathing difficulty, or severe diarrhoea. Avoid smoking and stay home when fever or illness makes normal activity difficult.

Arrange review if symptoms keep returning, swallowing becomes harder, or recovery is not progressing as expected.

Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, severe dehydration, or rapidly worsening swelling. Prompt review is needed for a muffled voice, marked one-sided swelling, neck stiffness, or severe pain that is getting worse.
