What should you know about liquid nitrogen for warts?

The clinician applies liquid nitrogen to the wart, sometimes treating a narrow edge of nearby skin. You may feel a sharp cold sensation, stinging and later tenderness. A blister or crust can appear, then the treated tissue separates as the skin repairs itself.

Warts are caused by human papillomavirus in the skin. Freezing targets the visible wart, but it may not remove every virus-infected cell, so a wart can persist or recur. Thick, extensive or difficult-to-reach warts may need a different approach or several treatment visits.

Tell the clinician whether the wart is painful, spreading, near a nail, or on a weight-bearing area. Mention diabetes, poor circulation, reduced sensation, immune problems and a history of unusual scarring. After treatment, wash gently, follow dressing instructions and avoid picking the blister or crust.

Do not share towels, nail tools or footwear used on the affected area. Keep hands and feet dry where possible, cover the wart when advised, and avoid home freezing products unless a clinician has confirmed they are appropriate for that site.

Seek review if the treated area becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen or painful, or if pus, fever or persistent bleeding develops. Ask for assessment of a wart that changes, ulcerates, bleeds without rubbing, or does not heal. A painful lesion on the sole may also need a diagnosis check because corns and other growths can resemble warts.

Ask whether the lesion is definitely a wart, how to manage pain, when another session might be considered, and how to reduce spread to other skin. Ask which treatment is suitable if freezing does not work.
