What should you know about liquid nitrogen for skin tags?

A clinician directs liquid nitrogen at the skin tag and its attachment point. The cold causes a controlled injury, so the tag may become pale, swollen or blistered before forming a crust and falling away. The treated spot can remain pink, darker or lighter while it heals.

A skin tag is usually a soft, harmless growth in a fold such as the neck, underarm or groin. A changing mole, wart or other lesion can look similar, so diagnosis comes before freezing. Liquid nitrogen removes the visible tag but does not prevent new tags from appearing elsewhere.

Tell the clinician if the growth bleeds, changes quickly, is painful, or has an uncertain history. Mention diabetes, poor circulation, reduced sensation, a tendency to form thick scars and any medicines that affect healing. After treatment, keep the site clean and dry as instructed, avoid rubbing it, and do not pull off a blister or crust.

Do not tie off, cut or freeze a growth at home. In a skin fold, loose clothing can reduce friction while the area is tender. Ask when deodorant, shaving or swimming can restart if the site is near an underarm or groin.

Contact the clinic if redness spreads, pain intensifies, pus appears, or bleeding continues despite gentle pressure. Arrange an examination for a growth that changes shape or colour, repeatedly bleeds, becomes firm, or fails to heal after removal. Those features warrant confirmation that the lesion was a skin tag.
