What should you know about liquid biopsy and prostate cancer?

Cancer cells can release fragments of DNA into the blood. A liquid biopsy examines selected features in those fragments and may help the team consider treatment for advanced or changing disease. A detected alteration does not describe the whole tumour, and a result with no detected alteration may occur when there is not enough tumour material in the sample. It should not be read as proof that cancer is absent.

Clinicians interpret the report with examination, prostate-specific tests, scans, pathology, symptoms, and previous treatment. The result may be discussed alongside radiotherapy, surgery, medicines, or targeted radioisotope therapy, depending on the individual situation. Difficulty passing urine has several possible causes and needs assessment rather than assumptions about cancer.

Find out what the laboratory tested and whether the result identifies a treatment-relevant change. Ask if confirmation, tissue testing, or another blood sample is needed. Keep the report with your medication and treatment records. If your team is considering a new treatment, ask how the molecular finding fits with scan results and your current symptoms. A negative or incomplete report may lead to a different testing plan.

Tell your care team promptly about worsening bone pain, new weakness or numbness, blood in the urine, fever, or increasing difficulty passing urine. Seek emergency help if you cannot pass urine, develop sudden leg weakness, lose bowel or bladder control, or have severe back pain with neurological symptoms. These problems need urgent assessment and should not wait for molecular-test results.
