What should you know about liquid biopsy assays?

Tumour cells can release small fragments of genetic material into the bloodstream. A laboratory assay looks for selected changes in that circulating material and may help identify a treatment-relevant feature or track a change over time. The amount of signal can vary with tumour location, size and activity, and a blood result does not show every detail of a cancer. A liquid biopsy is therefore interpreted alongside scans, symptoms and other clinical information.

Ask what the assay is designed to detect, whether it is being used to select treatment, monitor known disease or investigate resistance, and what a result could change. The sample is usually collected from a vein and sent to a laboratory. A result that finds no signal may not rule out cancer or a relevant change; your doctor may recommend a tissue biopsy when more detail is needed. Confirm how and when results will be explained.

A liquid biopsy itself is usually a blood draw, but seek medical help for bleeding that does not stop, increasing pain, spreading redness or swelling at the needle site, dizziness that does not settle, or breathlessness. Contact your cancer team promptly if new symptoms develop while the assay is being used to monitor treatment, because symptoms need clinical assessment rather than waiting for a laboratory result.

Ask which signal the assay detects, how a positive or negative result would affect your plan, when tissue biopsy is still needed, whether the test can monitor treatment response, and who will discuss the report with you.
