Why lips may swell

Swollen lips can result from irritation, allergy, injury, infection, or a medicine reaction, and breathing or swallowing symptoms need urgent medical care. The timing often gives useful clues: swelling after a new food, medicine, lip product, or dental material may point to a reaction, while swelling after biting or impact may reflect local injury. Cracking, crusting, warmth, tenderness, or a nearby sore can suggest inflammation or infection. Sudden swelling without an obvious trigger can also occur with angioedema, a deeper swelling reaction that may affect the lips, face, tongue, or throat.

What the pattern can mean

One swollen lip after a bite, burn, or knock is often limited to the injured area and may feel sore. Swelling with itching, hives, facial puffiness, or a tight throat is more concerning for an allergic-type reaction. Dryness, peeling, or burning after using a new balm, toothpaste, cosmetic, or sunscreen can fit contact irritation. A painful, hot, increasingly red area, pus, fever, or a dental problem needs assessment because infection can spread beyond the original spot. Recurrent episodes, especially without a clear exposure, deserve a clinician review of medicines, foods, and other triggers.

Angioedema can occur with or without raised itchy welts. Its swelling may develop quickly and can involve the tongue or throat, so new mouth or face swelling should be watched closely for changes in breathing, voice, or swallowing.

What you can do now

Stop using any newly introduced lip or facial product and rinse the area gently with lukewarm water. A cool, clean compress may ease discomfort. Avoid scratching, squeezing, fragranced products, and foods that sting broken skin. If a tooth, mouth sore, bite, or recent procedure may be involved, arrange an appropriate medical or dental assessment. Keep a note of when the swelling began, what you ate or used beforehand, and any medicines taken recently. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without professional advice, but tell the prescriber promptly if swelling began after it.

When to seek care

Seek emergency care immediately if lip swelling comes with trouble breathing, wheezing, throat or tongue swelling, difficulty swallowing, a changed voice, faintness, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Do not wait to see whether these signs settle. Prompt medical assessment is also sensible for swelling with fever, severe pain, spreading redness, pus, a serious dental concern, or swelling that keeps returning. Arrange a routine appointment if the cause is unclear, the swelling does not settle, or it follows a new medicine or repeated exposure.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Could a medicine, food, dental material, or lip product explain this swelling? Do the pattern and accompanying symptoms fit angioedema or another condition? What warning signs should make me seek emergency help? If this happens again, what details should I record and which medicines or products should I avoid until the cause is clearer?

Questions people ask

Can a new lip product cause swollen lips?

Yes. Fragrance, flavouring, preservatives, or another ingredient may irritate the skin or trigger a contact reaction. Stop the new product and seek advice if swelling persists or returns.

Are swollen lips an emergency?

They can be, especially when swelling affects the tongue or throat or comes with breathing, swallowing, voice, or faintness symptoms. Seek emergency care immediately in that situation.

What information should I bring to an appointment?

Note when swelling started, what changed beforehand, whether it itches or hurts, any rash or fever, recent medicines and products, and whether similar episodes happened before.
