Lip Swelling and Hives: What to Know

Hives are raised, itchy welts that can move from one area to another. Lip swelling is deeper tissue swelling and may occur at the same time as hives. Together, they can follow a food, medicine, insect sting, infection, pressure, heat, or another trigger, although a cause is not always found. Angioedema describes deeper swelling and may occur with or without hives. Hives themselves do not prove which trigger caused the episode.

If symptoms began after a new food, medicine, or product, stop further exposure and record the details. Keep cool, avoid scratching, and use only an antihistamine that is appropriate for you and taken according to professional advice or its label. A clinician may discuss oral antihistamine therapy; more extensive reactions may need other treatment. Do not rely on home treatment if swelling is progressing or the mouth, tongue, or throat is involved.

Call emergency services for difficulty breathing, wheezing, throat or tongue swelling, trouble swallowing, a muffled voice, dizziness, faintness, or sudden worsening. These symptoms can signal a severe allergic reaction. Arrange medical review when episodes recur, last longer than expected, leave bruising, or occur with fever or significant pain.
