Swollen Lips Inside the Mouth: What to Know

A bitten lip, sharp tooth, hot food, dental work, or a new mouth product can inflame the tissue. A local infection may bring tenderness, warmth, discharge, tooth pain, or fever. Allergy-related swelling can appear quickly after food, medicine, toothpaste, lip products, or contact with another trigger. Angioedema is deeper swelling beneath the surface and can affect the lips, tongue, throat, or mouth lining. The appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Stop any newly introduced food, medicine, cosmetic, or oral-care product unless a clinician has told you to continue it. Rinse gently with cool water, choose soft foods, and avoid heat, alcohol, tobacco, and spicy or acidic foods while the area is irritated. Do not puncture the swelling or apply unprescribed creams inside the mouth. Note when it began, what touched your mouth, and whether it is changing. A clinician or dentist can examine persistent, painful, or recurrent swelling.

Call emergency services immediately if swelling affects the tongue or throat, breathing, swallowing, voice, or ability to handle saliva, or if you feel faint or rapidly worse. Sudden lip and mouth swelling can be angioedema, which may progress even when a rash is absent. Seek prompt medical assessment for fever, pus, severe tooth pain, spreading redness, or swelling that keeps increasing.
