Swollen Lips With Boils: What to Know

A boil is a deeper inflamed lump, often centred on a hair follicle, that may become red, warm, painful, and filled with pus. A lesion beside the mouth can make the lip look puffy even when the main lump is in the surrounding skin. Nearby skin lumps and painful skin can have other causes, including an inflamed cyst or a dental problem, so appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.

Do not squeeze or pierce a boil near the mouth. Pressure can push infection deeper, injure the skin, and spread bacteria to hands or nearby surfaces.

Wash your hands before and after touching the area, keep it covered with a clean dressing if it is draining, and avoid sharing towels, cosmetics, or razors. A warm, clean compress may provide comfort, but stop if it increases pain or swelling. Arrange a medical examination if the lump is on the face, enlarging, very painful, draining, or accompanied by fever. Treatment may involve prescribed antibiotics or a clinician-performed drainage procedure; do not attempt either at home.

Seek urgent assessment for rapidly spreading redness or swelling, fever, severe pain, swelling around the eye, vision changes, severe headache, confusion, or difficulty swallowing or breathing. Same-day review is sensible for a boil close to the nose or mouth, especially when the swelling is progressing or the person has a weakened immune system.

Ask whether the lump is a boil, abscess, cyst, or another problem, whether a sample or drainage is needed, and which treatment fits its size and location. Ask how to dress the area, protect household contacts, and recognise worsening infection.
