Swollen Lips and Cheeks: What It Can Mean

Sudden swelling of the lips and cheeks may occur with a reaction to food, medicine, a sting, or a product touching the skin. Angioedema is a condition that presents with deeper swelling beneath the skin and can affect the lips and face. It may occur with hives, but hives are not required. One-sided swelling with tooth pain, warmth, redness, or discharge can point toward a dental or skin infection. Injury and fluid irritation after a cosmetic procedure are other possibilities.

The timing is useful: note what you ate, took, applied, or did shortly before the swelling began, and whether it is spreading or settling.

Stop using a new cosmetic, cleanser, or lip product until the cause is clearer. Keep a record of medicines, foods, stings, procedures, and symptoms. A cool compress may ease discomfort if the skin is intact. Do not apply unfamiliar creams or take someone else’s medicine. Arrange medical assessment when the swelling is new, recurrent, one-sided, painful, or unexplained; bring photos if it changes before you are seen.

Get emergency help immediately if swelling affects the tongue or throat, breathing becomes difficult, your voice changes, you wheeze, feel faint, or the swelling is advancing quickly. These signs can accompany a severe allergic reaction or deeper airway swelling. Seek same-day assessment for fever, severe pain, spreading redness, pus, or difficulty opening the mouth.
