What should you know about liposuction support garments?

After fat removal, fluid and inflammation can make the skin feel firm, tender, or uneven. A support garment holds dressings in place when appropriate and gives gentle, consistent pressure while swelling changes. It cannot tighten loose abdominal muscles or correct skin laxity by itself. The garment should cover the treated region without cutting into the waist, groin, armpit, or incision edges.

Follow the exact wearing instructions from your surgeon, including when it may come off for hygiene. Wash it as directed and have a clean replacement if your care team recommends one. Inspect the skin each time you change it, particularly around seams and openings. Short, easy walks can help you stay mobile; avoid pressure or activity that your clinician has restricted. Do not add tight layers underneath unless the clinic approves them.

Call your surgical team if swelling suddenly increases, one side becomes much more painful, drainage becomes cloudy or foul-smelling, or an incision opens. Fever, spreading warmth, or redness also warrants prompt advice. Get emergency help for chest pain, sudden shortness of breath, fainting, or coughing blood. Do not wait for a garment change to resolve severe symptoms.

Ask how the garment should sit over each incision, how to recognise harmful pressure, and when the wearing schedule can change. You can also ask about bathing, skin moisturisers, sleeping positions, walking, and the review plan for persistent swelling or hard areas.
