What should you know about lipoma under skin?

Lipomas develop from fat cells in the tissue beneath the skin. They commonly feel smooth, soft or rubbery, with a rounded outline and some movement under the fingers. They can occur on the trunk, arms, shoulders, neck or thighs. Many remain small and cause no discomfort, while a larger lump may press on nearby tissue and feel tender or awkward during movement. A skin lump is not automatically a lipoma, so a clinician may examine its texture, depth, mobility and growth pattern.

Arrange a clinical assessment for a new lump, especially if you are unsure what it is. Do not squeeze, puncture or repeatedly massage it. Note when you first noticed it, whether it is growing, and whether clothing, exercise or pressure makes it uncomfortable. If examination does not clearly identify the lump, the clinician may recommend imaging or another test. A lipoma that is stable and comfortable may simply be observed. If it is painful, enlarging, bothersome or cosmetically concerning, discuss lipoma removal and the expected scar, healing period and recurrence considerations.

Seek prompt medical advice if a lump grows quickly, feels hard or fixed, becomes persistently painful, develops redness or warmth, or causes numbness or weakness. Arrange assessment sooner if it lies deep, is difficult to move, or is associated with unexplained changes in your general health. Sudden severe pain, marked swelling or skin discoloration warrants urgent evaluation. These features do not diagnose a serious condition, but they should not be explained away as a lipoma without examination.

Ask: Does the lump have the features of a lipoma? Is it superficial or deeper in the tissue? Do I need imaging? What changes should I monitor? If removal is suitable, where would the incision be, what type of anaesthesia is used, and how will the removed tissue be checked?
