What should you know about lipoma mouth?

A lipoma is made of mature fat cells and may feel soft, smooth, and mobile when it lies beneath the lining of the mouth or in nearby facial tissue. The mouth also contains glands, lymph tissue, muscles, and teeth, so a swelling in this region may have another cause. Location alone cannot confirm a lipoma.

A clinician will look at the lining, teeth, tongue, jaw, and nearby neck, then consider the lump's duration, texture, mobility, growth, and effect on chewing or speech. Imaging or tissue examination may be suggested when the findings are unclear. Avoid trying to pop or scrape an oral lump.

Arrange an examination with a dentist, doctor, or oral and maxillofacial clinician for a new or persistent swelling. Record when it began, whether it changes with meals or irritation, and whether it affects chewing, swallowing, speech, or dental fit. Seek prompt review for a swelling that enlarges, bleeds, ulcerates, becomes hard or fixed, or causes persistent pain, numbness, or unexplained neck swelling. Seek urgent care if swelling makes breathing or swallowing difficult, saliva cannot be handled, or there is rapidly worsening pain with fever. These symptoms need assessment even when a lipoma is suspected.
