What should you know about lipoma mesotherapy?

Mesotherapy is not a routine way to diagnose or remove a lipoma; have the lump assessed before considering injections. Mesotherapy places small amounts of one or more substances into the skin or just beneath it. A lipoma, by contrast, is a soft lump made of fatty tissue beneath the skin. An injection approach should not be used to assume that a lump is a lipoma or to delay a clinical examination.

A clinician can often assess a typical lipoma by feeling it and checking its location, size, movement and changes over time. If the lump is unusual, deep, firm, fixed, rapidly changing or difficult to identify on examination, further assessment may be advised. This can include imaging or sampling tissue, depending on the findings. Mesotherapy products vary, and an injection can cause temporary soreness, swelling, bruising, irritation or infection. It may also make later assessment harder if the area becomes inflamed.

If the concern is appearance, discomfort from pressure, or uncertainty about the diagnosis, discuss options with a dermatologist or another suitably qualified clinician. Removal of a confirmed, bothersome lipoma is a separate medical decision from mesotherapy.

Arrange an assessment before booking injections for a lump that may be a lipoma. Note when you first noticed it, whether it has changed, and whether clothing, movement or pressure makes it uncomfortable. Bring a list of medicines and supplements, especially medicines that affect bleeding, and mention allergies, skin infections and previous reactions to injections. Ask exactly what will be injected, where it will be placed, what the intended benefit is, and what alternatives exist if the lump is confirmed as a lipoma. Book a medical review if a lump is new, growing, painful, hard, stuck in place, deep, or associated with changes in the overlying skin. Seek prompt care if the area becomes hot, very red, increasingly swollen, drains fluid, or you feel unwell, because these features can indicate inflammation or infection rather than an uncomplicated lipoma. Do not inject or massage a changing lump while waiting for assessment.

Ask: Does this lump have the features of a lipoma? Do I need imaging or tissue sampling? Would observation, removal or another option fit my symptoms? What risks would an injection create in this location? How should I care for the skin afterwards, and which changes should prompt a follow-up?
