What should you know about a lipid profile test on an empty stomach?

Food can temporarily change some blood-fat measurements, particularly triglycerides. For many people, a non-fasting sample is suitable, but a clinician may request fasting when triglycerides need a clearer assessment, when a previous result was unexpected, or when other blood tests are being collected at the same visit. The instruction should come from the team arranging your test rather than from a general rule found online.

Check how long you should avoid food and which drinks are allowed. Water is often permitted, but confirm this with the laboratory. Ask whether you should take your usual medicines; never leave out prescribed treatment without specific advice. Tell the phlebotomist if you accidentally ate, drank something restricted or felt unwell. They can decide whether to proceed or rearrange the sample. Bring a list of medicines and supplements if the clinician is reviewing an unusual result.

Contact the testing service before attending if the fasting instructions are unclear or you have a condition that makes fasting difficult. During or after the blood draw, tell staff promptly about severe dizziness, fainting or ongoing weakness. Seek urgent care for chest pressure, severe breathlessness or sudden neurological symptoms; fasting status does not explain these warning signs.

Ask whether your sample must be fasting, what you may drink, how to handle regular medicines, and whether an accidental meal means the test should be rescheduled.
