What should you know about lip wart removal?

A wart is a rough growth caused by a viral infection in the outer skin. On the lip, it may sit on the visible lip border, nearby skin, or inside the mouth; those locations are not treated in exactly the same way. A clinician may inspect its surface and ask how long it has been present, whether it has changed, and whether it bleeds or hurts.

Removal may involve a carefully selected procedure or a prescribed topical treatment. Products intended for ordinary hand or foot warts can damage the thin skin of the lips and should not be used there unless a qualified clinician specifically directs you.

Arrange an assessment with a dermatologist or suitably trained clinician before trying to remove the growth. Do not pick, cut, burn, or shave it, and avoid sharing towels, lip products, or razors while it is being assessed. Follow wound-care instructions after treatment, keep the area clean, and protect healing skin from unnecessary friction.

Take a clear note of when you first noticed it and any changes in size, texture, colour, tenderness, or bleeding. Mention cold sores, immune conditions, pregnancy, allergies, and medicines that affect healing or bleeding.

Seek prompt medical assessment if the growth bleeds without being touched, forms a persistent sore, becomes rapidly larger, changes colour, or causes marked pain. Urgent help is appropriate for swelling that affects breathing or swallowing, or for signs of spreading infection such as increasing warmth, pus, or fever.
