What should you know about lip swollen out of nowhere?

Sudden swelling can follow a food, medicine, cosmetic, toothpaste, insect bite, or unnoticed injury. It may be itchy and soft, or painful and associated with a cut, blister, warmth, or redness. Angioedema is a condition that can present with deeper swelling of the lips and may happen without an obvious skin change. Infection becomes more concerning when swelling is hot, increasingly painful, spreading, or accompanied by fever. The appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Stop using any new product and avoid the suspected food or medicine until a clinician advises you. Take a photo, note the time, and list recent exposures. Sit upright, use a cool compress, and avoid rubbing or puncturing the lip. Do not delay emergency care while trying home remedies if swelling is progressing or affects the mouth, tongue, or throat.

Call emergency services now for tongue or throat swelling, breathing difficulty, trouble swallowing, a changed voice, dizziness, collapse, or widespread hives. Seek urgent medical assessment for rapid enlargement, severe pain, fever, pus, or spreading facial redness. Even if it settles, arrange review when the episode is unexplained, follows a medicine, or happens again.

Ask which recent exposures are most relevant, whether the episode fits angioedema or another cause, what to avoid, and what action plan to follow if swelling returns.
