What should you know about lip swollen on one side lower?

A small injury, accidental biting, sharp tooth, or irritated lip product can make one part of the lower lip swell. A smooth bump on the inner lip may follow trauma or involve a saliva gland. Tooth or gum inflammation may cause nearby tenderness, pain, bad taste, or facial swelling. Deeper swelling such as angioedema can involve the lip without a visible surface injury. These clues can narrow the possibilities but cannot replace an examination.

Rinse gently with water, avoid biting or rubbing the area, and use a cool compress on the outside of the lip. Choose soft, mild foods if chewing hurts and pause new cosmetics or lip treatments. Do not puncture an inner-lip bump or use someone else’s prescription. Contact a dentist when tooth or gum symptoms are present; contact a clinician if the swelling is unexplained or persistent.

Get emergency help if the tongue or throat becomes swollen, breathing or swallowing becomes difficult, your voice changes, or you feel faint. Seek prompt assessment for fever, pus, severe tooth pain, rapidly spreading redness, or fast enlargement. A clinician should review swelling that fails to settle, repeatedly returns, or is accompanied by other areas of swelling.
