What should you know about lip swollen from sun?

Lips have a thin, sensitive surface and can become red, warm, tender, dry, or cracked after strong sunlight. Swelling may appear with burning discomfort and can worsen over the following hours. Wind, heat, dehydration, and licking the lips can add irritation. A blister, crust, or sore may point toward more than simple dryness. Swelling without visible sun irritation can instead reflect a reaction to food, medicine, lip products, or an insect bite; angioedema is one condition associated with deeper swelling.

Move out of direct sunlight and use a cool, clean, damp cloth briefly on the lips. Do not apply ice directly, scrub peeling skin, or break blisters. Sip fluids and avoid spicy, acidic, very hot, or salty foods if they sting. Stop any new lip balm, cosmetic, toothpaste, or other product that may be touching the area. Once the skin settles, protect the lips with a broad-spectrum lip sunscreen and shade. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an appropriate pain reliever or treatment is suitable for you.

Get emergency help immediately if swelling reaches the tongue or throat, or if you have trouble breathing, swallowing, speaking, dizziness, or widespread hives. Arrange prompt medical assessment if the swelling is rapidly increasing, severe, associated with pus or fever, follows a new medicine or food, or does not start settling after leaving the sun. Repeated episodes deserve a clinician’s review even when each episode improves.
