Lip swelling in pregnancy: what to know and when to seek care

Pregnancy can change how your body handles salt and fluid, so mild puffiness may affect the lips along with the hands, feet, or face. Chapped skin, a new lip product, food, medicine, or an insect bite can also irritate the area. Itching, hives, wheezing, or swelling of the tongue points more toward an allergic reaction.

Swelling of the face, hands, or lips that appears suddenly or becomes pronounced is different from gradual mild puffiness. It can occur with pre-eclampsia, a pregnancy-related condition involving blood pressure and other organs. Lip swelling alone cannot identify its cause, and a clinician may need to check your blood pressure, urine, and symptoms.

Note when the swelling began, whether it is on one side or both, and whether it is changing. Stop using a newly introduced lip product and avoid any food or medicine you suspect caused the reaction until a clinician advises you. Do not start an antihistamine, pain medicine, or herbal product in pregnancy without checking that it is suitable.

Contact your maternity team or doctor promptly about new facial or lip swelling, even if you otherwise feel well. They can tell you whether you need a same-day assessment and can check for pregnancy-related blood-pressure problems.

Call emergency services immediately if the swelling affects your tongue or throat, or if you have trouble breathing, swallowing, speaking, feel faint, or develop widespread hives. These can signal a severe allergic reaction.

Seek urgent maternity or medical assessment for sudden facial swelling with a severe or persistent headache, blurred vision or flashing lights, pain under the ribs, vomiting, shortness of breath, or feeling unusually unwell. These symptoms can occur with pre-eclampsia and should not be assessed by swelling alone.
