Lip itching and swelling: what should you know?

New lip products, toothpaste, foods, medicines, or dental materials can trigger contact irritation or an allergic reaction. Dry, cracked skin may become inflamed, while hives can cause sudden raised, itchy swelling. A clinician may also consider conditions such as Contact Dermatitis, Atopic Dermatitis, Hives, or a skin infection when there is scaling, oozing, crusting, or spreading redness. Itching with swelling does not identify one diagnosis by itself.

Stop any newly introduced lip or facial product and rinse gently with lukewarm water. Avoid licking, scratching, fragranced balms, and foods that sting. Apply a bland protective ointment and use a cool compress for short periods. Note when the symptoms began, what touched your lips, and whether the swelling is changing. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an antihistamine or prescribed treatment is suitable for you.

Get emergency help if swelling involves the tongue or throat, breathing becomes difficult, your voice changes, you feel faint, or symptoms spread quickly. Arrange prompt medical assessment for fever, severe pain, pus, blisters, facial swelling, or a sore that does not settle. Seek review if episodes recur or the trigger remains unclear.
