What should you know about lip hurts and swollen?

Pain and swelling together can occur after biting the lip, dental work, a burn, a cut, a pimple, or contact with an irritating product. Infection becomes more concerning when the area is increasingly warm, red, tender, or draining, especially with fever. Angioedema can present with lip swelling and may occur with or without itch; pain is not enough to identify the cause.

A blistering sore, a one-sided tender lump, or swelling that began after a new medicine or food gives different clues. Record the onset, changes, triggers, and any rash or mouth symptoms for a clinician.

Use a cool compress for short periods and keep the area clean. Avoid picking, squeezing, hot foods, alcohol-based products, fragranced balms, and anything that clearly worsens the discomfort. If there was an injury, gentle rinsing can remove debris, but do not scrub the tissue.

Seek medical advice if pain or swelling is increasing, the cause is unclear, a wound is not settling, or eating and drinking become difficult. A clinician can examine the lip and mouth, assess for infection or allergy, and decide whether treatment is needed.

Get emergency help for difficulty breathing, throat tightness, trouble swallowing, a hoarse voice, faintness, or rapidly spreading swelling of the tongue, mouth, or face. Seek prompt same-day assessment for severe pain, fever, spreading redness, pus, or swelling after a significant injury.

Ask whether the pattern suggests injury, infection, contact irritation, or angioedema; whether the mouth and teeth need checking; and which medicines or products to avoid. Ask what changes mean you should return urgently.
