What should you know about lip getting swollen?

Lip swelling may follow a bite, injury, sun exposure, contact with a cosmetic or food, dental irritation, infection, or a medicine. It can affect one area or both lips and may appear suddenly or build gradually. Angioedema is one condition that can present with sudden swelling of deeper skin tissues, including the lips; swelling alone cannot establish its cause.

Note when it began, whether it is itchy or painful, and what happened beforehand. Hives, facial swelling, a rash, warmth, blisters, fever, or mouth and tongue swelling provide useful clues for assessment.

Stop using a newly introduced lip product, cosmetic, or suspected trigger, and rinse the area gently if residue remains. Use a cool compress wrapped in clean cloth and avoid scratching, rubbing, or applying more products while the cause is unclear. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without contacting the prescriber, but report a possible reaction promptly.

Arrange medical advice when swelling is unexplained, recurrent, painful, associated with a rash, or not settling. A clinician may ask about foods, medicines, products, bites, dental work, and previous episodes.

Call emergency services immediately for difficulty breathing, wheezing, throat tightness, trouble swallowing, a hoarse voice, faintness, or rapidly worsening swelling of the tongue, mouth, or face. These features can signal a severe allergic-type reaction. Do not wait to see whether the swelling settles when breathing or throat symptoms are present.

Ask what causes are most consistent with the timing and accompanying symptoms, whether this could be angioedema, which triggers to avoid, and what action plan to follow if swelling returns. Bring a list of recent medicines, foods, products, and procedures.
