What should you know about a linear particle accelerator?

In a radiotherapy LINAC, electrical fields accelerate electrons through an internal structure. The resulting beam is managed by the machine and shaped according to a plan made from your scans. The treatment head can direct radiation from selected angles while you lie on a couch in a fixed position.

This is a piece of treatment equipment, not a device implanted in the patient. Radiation therapists operate the machine, while the oncology and medical physics teams plan and verify the delivery. Imaging and built-in safety checks help confirm that the planned area is aligned before treatment begins.

Bring information about medicines, allergies, implanted devices, previous radiotherapy, and any chance of pregnancy to the planning team. Follow instructions about preparation and arrive in clothing that allows comfortable positioning. A mask, cushion, or other support may be made to help you stay aligned.

During delivery, remain still and use the intercom if you need assistance. You may hear the equipment move or operate. The beam is delivered from outside the body, so you do not carry radiation afterward. Side effects are related to the treated region and the overall plan, rather than to the name of the accelerator alone.

Tell your treatment team about persistent or worsening symptoms, especially fever, increasing pain, severe skin irritation, repeated vomiting, new weakness, or trouble eating, drinking, breathing, or urinating. Seek emergency care for severe breathlessness, fainting, confusion, or bleeding that does not stop.

Ask how the particles become a treatment beam, which area will receive radiation, how accuracy is checked, and what side effects should prompt a call. It is also reasonable to ask how long setup usually takes and who can answer questions between visits.
