What should you know about linear accelerator and cyclotron?

A linear accelerator, often called a linac, accelerates electrons and can use them directly or convert them into high-energy X-rays. In radiation treatment, the beam is aimed at a planned area while the machine rotates around the treatment position. Beam shaping and image guidance help the team match the plan to the body each day.

A cyclotron accelerates charged particles around a circular path. It is not the usual machine for standard external-beam radiotherapy. Cyclotrons may support production of medical isotopes, and some facilities use particle beams such as protons for selected cases. The machine, treatment room, and safety systems depend on the service being provided.

Ask which machine is being proposed, what type of radiation or particle it produces, and why that approach fits your tumour location and treatment goal. Confirm whether imaging is used for positioning, how the treatment area is marked, and what you should do if you cannot lie still or feel unwell. A machine name alone does not determine the whole treatment plan; planning scans, dose design, immobilisation, and review by the radiation team all matter.

Contact the radiation unit promptly if you develop new or worsening symptoms during treatment, such as trouble breathing, repeated vomiting, confusion, severe pain, or a new weakness. Tell the team about implanted devices, pregnancy possibility, or difficulty staying in the planned position before a session. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, collapse, or sudden neurological changes.
