What should you know about limb cellulitis?

Short answer
Limb cellulitis is a bacterial infection of deeper skin and soft tissue that can cause spreading redness, warmth, swelling, and pain in an arm or leg.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How cellulitis can start
Bacteria can enter through a cut, crack, ulcer, bite, surgical wound, or fungal infection between the toes. The affected limb may become hot, tender, swollen, and increasingly red; the edge can expand over time. Fever or feeling unwell may occur. Athlete’s foot, diabetes, lymphatic swelling, and previous cellulitis can increase concern, but a clinician must distinguish cellulitis from other causes of a red or swollen limb.
Cellulitis is not the same as a superficial irritation. Without appropriate treatment, infection can spread into nearby tissue or the bloodstream.
What to do now
Arrange same-day medical assessment for a new, spreading, painful, or hot area on an arm or leg. Treatment commonly involves prescribed antibiotics, chosen according to the examination and the suspected bacteria. Take the medicine exactly as directed and complete the prescribed course unless the prescriber changes it.
Rest and elevate the limb when practical, drink fluids if you can, and avoid squeezing, scratching, or massaging the area. Marking the edge of redness can help show whether it is expanding, but it does not replace review.
When it is an emergency
Seek emergency help for confusion, faintness, breathing difficulty, a very fast heartbeat, severe weakness, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain out of proportion to the skin findings, or purple or blistered skin. These can signal a serious complication such as sepsis or a deeper infection.
Contact the prescriber if symptoms worsen, fever develops, or the limb is not beginning to settle after treatment starts. People with diabetes, poor circulation, immune suppression, or a leg ulcer should seek advice promptly.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what may have allowed bacteria through the skin, how soon improvement should begin, which symptoms require urgent review, and how to prevent another episode. Ask whether athlete’s foot, an ulcer, or diabetes needs separate care.

Questions people ask
Can limb cellulitis go away without treatment?
It needs medical assessment because bacterial infection may spread; do not rely on home care alone when redness is spreading or the limb is painful and hot.
Why can athlete’s foot matter?
Cracked skin between the toes can provide an entry point for bacteria, so treating the fungal infection may help reduce recurrence risk.
