Short answer

Lightheadedness can happen when the brain briefly receives less blood flow, while fainting is a short loss of consciousness.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

First response
Lie flat, raise your legs, and avoid sudden standing
Record
Trigger, warning symptoms, duration, recovery, and injury
High concern
Exercise-related fainting, chest symptoms, or delayed recovery

What may be behind an episode

Standing quickly, heat, dehydration, pain, anxiety, missed meals, or Hypoglycaemia can trigger symptoms. Anaemia and Iron Deficiency Anaemia may reduce oxygen delivery. A spinning sensation can occur with Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo, whereas an irregular heartbeat such as Atrial Fibrillation can cause palpitations or weakness and needs medical review.

The timing matters: note whether symptoms followed standing, exertion, heat, a meal, emotional stress, or a head movement. Fainting during exercise, without warning, or with heart symptoms is more concerning than a brief episode after standing.

What to do during symptoms

Lie flat and raise your legs if possible. Loosen tight clothing, stay still until the feeling passes, and ask someone to remain with you. After fainting, check for injury and do not stand suddenly. Once fully alert, drink water and eat if you have missed a meal and can swallow safely.

Arrange a medical review after fainting, a first episode, repeated lightheadedness, or an episode that caused injury. Bring details of medicines, illness, fluid intake, and family history of heart problems.

When to seek urgent care

Call emergency services for chest pain, trouble breathing, severe or irregular palpitations, a seizure-like episode, prolonged confusion, one-sided weakness, speech difficulty, severe headache, heavy bleeding, serious injury, or fainting during exercise. Urgent assessment is also needed if the person is pregnant, has diabetes, or does not recover promptly.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what trigger is most plausible, whether blood pressure, blood tests, or heart monitoring is needed, how to prevent another episode, and which symptoms should send you to emergency care.

Questions people ask

What should I do if I feel faint?

Lie down, raise your legs if possible, and remain still until the sensation settles; seek help if it does not improve.

Is fainting always harmless?

No. A first, repeated, injury-causing, exercise-related, or heart-symptom-associated episode should be medically assessed.
