What should you know about a lighted otoscope?

A clinician may use it to look for earwax blocking the canal, swelling, irritation, a foreign object, fluid behind the eardrum, or changes that fit an ear infection. The light does not diagnose every cause of ear pain or reduced hearing by itself; symptoms, medical history, and the appearance of both ears are considered together.

The examination usually involves gently positioning the outer ear and placing the otoscope tip at the canal opening. A child may need reassurance and a steady position. Do not put cotton buds or other objects into the ear before an assessment, because they can push wax deeper or injure the canal.

Arrange a GP assessment if ear discomfort, blocked hearing, discharge, or a feeling of pressure persists. A child with ear symptoms can be assessed through a Child Health Consultation. Tell the clinician about fever, recent swimming, an upper-respiratory illness, hearing changes, previous ear problems, and any object or drops used in the ear.

A clinician may remove visible wax, recommend observation, or discuss treatment after checking the eardrum. Avoid sharing ear drops and avoid inserting anything into the canal unless a clinician has advised it.

Seek urgent medical help for severe ear pain, sudden hearing loss, blood or pus from the ear, marked swelling behind the ear, a new facial weakness, severe dizziness, or an object stuck in the ear. Get prompt advice after an ear injury or if a young child is unusually drowsy or difficult to settle.
