Light spotting the day after sex

Friction can irritate the vaginal lining or cervix, especially when there was dryness or more vigorous contact. Spotting may also occur with hormonal contraception, an infection such as chlamydia, cervical dysplasia, or a growth such as a polyp. A cervical cancer diagnosis is not implied by spotting; cervical cancer can present with bleeding after sex, so ongoing or unexplained episodes deserve review.

Notice the colour, amount, timing, and whether the blood is only on toilet paper or needs a pad. Avoid further penetration until bleeding and soreness settle. Arrange a clinician visit if this happens again, follows sex regularly, or occurs with discharge, pelvic pain, burning when urinating, or a new sexual partner. A clinician may examine the vagina and cervix and offer infection testing or cervical screening when appropriate.

Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided pelvic pain, faintness, shoulder-tip pain, fever, or a positive pregnancy test with bleeding. If you have gone through menopause, any vaginal bleeding needs prompt medical assessment, even when it is light.
