Short answer

Light spotting after sex can come from minor irritation of the vagina or cervix, but repeated or unexplained bleeding deserves a medical assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it may mean

Friction, dryness, or a small surface injury can cause a few drops of blood. Cervical inflammation, sexually transmitted infection, cervical dysplasia, polyps, or fibroids can also present with bleeding after intercourse. Cervical cancer can present with bleeding after sex, but this symptom alone does not identify its cause.

What to do

Record the colour, amount, timing, pain, discharge, and whether it happens again. Pause intercourse if it causes pain or bleeding, and arrange a clinician visit if spotting recurs or occurs without sex. An examination may include checking the vagina and cervix, infection testing, or cervical screening.

When to seek care

Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided pelvic pain, faintness, shoulder pain, fever, or bleeding during pregnancy. Repeated light bleeding still merits an appointment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what findings could explain bleeding after sex, whether you need infection testing or cervical screening, and which symptoms need urgent review.
