What should you know about light pins and needles in hands?

Tingling may happen when sleeping on an arm, leaning on an elbow or holding a wrist in one position. It should ease as pressure is removed. Symptoms that return may relate to a trapped nerve at the wrist, neck or elbow, or to a condition affecting nerves throughout the body. Peripheral neuropathy can be associated with [Type 2 Diabetes](/conditions/type-2-diabetes/), [Vitamin B12 Deficiency](/conditions/vitamin-b12-deficiency/) or [Hypothyroidism](/conditions/hypothyroidism/). Fast breathing during fear can also cause tingling around the hands, as can [Panic Disorder](/conditions/panic-disorder/) or [Generalised Anxiety Disorder](/conditions/generalised-anxiety-disorder/).

Change position, gently move your fingers and wrist, and avoid leaning on the affected arm. Notice whether typing, driving, sleeping posture or a particular activity brings it on. Keep a record of which fingers are affected, how long episodes last and whether weakness, clumsiness or pain occurs. Protect numb skin from heat and cuts because reduced sensation can hide an injury. Do not start vitamin supplements or alter prescribed medicines without advice.

Book a medical review if tingling persists, repeatedly wakes you, affects both hands, spreads, or comes with weakness or loss of grip.
