Light pink spotting in early pregnancy

Early pregnancy changes can make the cervix more sensitive, and light spotting may occur after sex or an examination. Bleeding can also accompany a threatened miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, infection, or another pregnancy-related problem. The colour and small amount cannot show whether the pregnancy is progressing normally. This symptom does not prove that a miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy is happening, but it should be reported so the right assessment can be chosen.

Contact your maternity team or clinician and describe the colour, amount, timing, pain, and whether the bleeding followed sex. Use a pad or liner to observe the flow rather than inserting anything into the vagina. Do not rely on spotting alone to confirm pregnancy status. If you have not had pregnancy care, arrange it and mention any previous pregnancy complications or blood-group advice you have been given.

Seek emergency care for one-sided or severe abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, marked dizziness, heavy bleeding, or feeling very unwell. Prompt assessment is also needed when bleeding increases, clots appear, fever develops, or pain persists. An ectopic pregnancy can be dangerous even when bleeding is light.
