Light dizziness: common causes and what to do

Short answer
Light dizziness can reflect dehydration, a blood-pressure change, low blood sugar, an inner-ear problem, anxiety, or another condition, so the pattern matters.

Understanding the sensation
Dizziness may mean feeling faint, unsteady, or as if the room is moving. Standing quickly, missing a meal, heat exposure, dehydration, medicines, or anaemia can produce lightheadedness. Brief spinning triggered by turning in bed or moving the head can occur with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. Anxiety can alter breathing and intensify an unsteady feeling. Less common causes include an irregular heart rhythm or neurological illness. Record the trigger, duration, position, food and fluid intake, and any palpitations, headache, weakness, or hearing change.
What to do during an episode
Sit or lie down immediately, move slowly, and avoid driving, heights, or machinery until you feel steady. Sip water and eat a usual snack if you may have missed food and can swallow safely. Rise in stages and keep a handhold nearby. If episodes recur, arrange a review of blood pressure, medicines, hydration, diet, hearing, balance, and possible blood tests rather than taking someone else’s treatment.
When to seek urgent care
Call for urgent help if dizziness comes with fainting, chest pain, severe breathlessness, a racing or irregular heartbeat, new weakness or numbness, trouble speaking, severe headache, confusion, or difficulty walking. Seek prompt care after a head injury, with persistent vomiting, or when dizziness is severe and does not settle.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms sound like lightheadedness or vertigo, whether blood pressure or blood tests are needed, and whether any medicine could contribute. Bring your episode notes and mention heavy periods, heat exposure, skipped meals, palpitations, and recent illness.

Questions people ask
What is the difference between dizziness and vertigo?
Dizziness is a broad term for unsteadiness or faintness; vertigo specifically describes a spinning or moving sensation.
Can dehydration cause mild dizziness?
Yes. Fluid loss or inadequate intake can reduce circulating volume and make standing feel lightheaded, especially in heat.
