Light Brown Spotting While Pregnant

Short answer
Light brown spotting while pregnant may be old blood or cervical irritation, but any new bleeding should be reported to your maternity team.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why it may happen
Brown spotting is often blood that has taken time to pass. During pregnancy, increased blood flow can make the cervix easier to irritate, including after sex or a vaginal examination. A small episode can also occur without a definite explanation, so its colour cannot confirm that everything is normal or abnormal.
Other possibilities include infection, cervical changes, or a pregnancy complication. Chlamydia may cause bleeding and unusual discharge. Symptoms such as pain, cramps, fever, dizziness, or increasing flow give the clinician more useful information than colour alone.
Practical steps
Tell your maternity team when the spotting began, whether it followed sex or an examination, how much there was, and whether it is continuing. Use a pad so you can observe changes. Mention your pregnancy stage, blood group if known, previous pregnancy problems, pain, discharge, and any medicines.
Follow the advice you receive about examination, ultrasound, blood tests, activity, and intercourse. Avoid tampons and vaginal products while bleeding. Do not stop prescribed treatment without speaking with the clinician who recommended it.
When to get urgent help
Seek urgent care for heavy or worsening bleeding, severe abdominal pain, one-sided pain, fainting, severe dizziness, shoulder-tip pain, fever, or weakness. Pregnancy-related bleeding with these symptoms needs prompt assessment, regardless of whether the blood is pink, red, or brown.
Questions to ask
Could this be cervical irritation, an infection, or something related to the pregnancy? Do I need an ultrasound or blood tests? Is sex or exercise appropriate while I am spotting? What should I do if the bleeding changes overnight?
