Light blood in vomit during pregnancy: what to know

Repeated vomiting can inflame the throat or the lining near the food pipe. A small bright-red streak may come from this surface irritation, especially after several episodes of retching. Dark material that resembles coffee grounds can indicate older blood and should be discussed urgently. Blood may also come from the mouth or nose and be swallowed before vomiting, so its source is not always the stomach. Pregnancy-related nausea does not explain every episode of bleeding, and a clinician may need to assess hydration, abdominal symptoms and the appearance of the vomit. Less common causes can involve the food pipe or stomach, including conditions such as oesophageal cancer or stomach cancer, but the symptom alone cannot identify its cause.

Stop eating for a short time if vomiting is active, then try small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink if you can keep fluids down. Avoid taking anti-inflammatory medicines or other medicines for nausea unless your maternity or medical team has advised them. Note the colour and approximate amount of blood, how often you vomited, and whether you have pain, fever or dizziness. Contact your obstetric team or a same-day medical service for advice, particularly if the bleeding returns, you cannot keep fluids down, or you have a known digestive condition.

Seek emergency help for more than a light streak, vomit that is dark or grainy, ongoing bleeding, faintness, confusion, severe weakness, trouble breathing, severe chest or abdominal pain, or black stools. Get urgent advice as well when vomiting prevents you from drinking, urination becomes very infrequent, or you feel increasingly dizzy when standing. These signs can point to significant bleeding or dehydration, which can affect you and your pregnancy. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint; ask someone to stay with you and bring a list of medicines you take.
