What should you know about light blood between periods?

Spotting may occur around ovulation, after starting or missing hormonal contraception, or when the lining of the womb is responding to a change in hormones. Irritation after sex can also cause a small amount of blood. Infections such as Chlamydia may cause bleeding with discharge, pelvic discomfort, or pain during sex. Cervical Dysplasia, polyps, fibroids, and less common womb or cervical conditions can also be considered. A symptom alone cannot identify the cause, and a light amount does not decide whether an examination is needed.

Record when the bleeding starts, its colour, how long it lasts, whether it follows sex, and any pain or discharge. Note contraception, pregnancy possibility, recent procedures, and medicines that affect bleeding. Arrange a clinical review if the bleeding returns, happens after sex, occurs after periods have stopped, or is accompanied by pelvic symptoms. Assessment may include a pregnancy test, infection testing, an examination of the vagina and cervix, and further imaging when appropriate.

Seek urgent medical help for heavy or rapidly increasing bleeding, faintness, severe or one-sided pelvic pain, shoulder-tip pain, fever, or bleeding during a possible pregnancy. These signs can need prompt assessment even when the bleeding first appeared light. Contact a clinician soon if spotting keeps returning, follows sex, or comes with unusual discharge, pain, or bleeding after menopause.
