What should you know about lifting nails from the bed?

The nail plate has pulled away from the skin beneath it, creating a pale, white, or yellow area that may collect debris. Repeated wet work, picking, manicures, trauma, irritating chemicals, skin inflammation, and infection can all contribute. The appearance alone cannot identify the cause. Nail fungus and nail psoriasis are two conditions a clinician may consider, especially when several nails change or the nail becomes thick, crumbly, ridged, or discoloured.

Keep the nail short by trimming only the detached edge with clean clippers; do not pull attached nail away. Keep hands and feet dry after washing, wear protective gloves for cleaning, and avoid polish, artificial nails, scraping, and harsh removers until the area settles. Do not place products under the lifted nail. A clinician can inspect the nail and surrounding skin and may take a sample if infection is suspected. Arrange an assessment if separation persists, spreads, affects several nails, or returns after improving. Seek prompt care for increasing pain, warmth, swelling, pus, bleeding, a dark streak that is changing, or a nail that lifted after a significant injury. People with diabetes, poor circulation, reduced immunity, or limited sensation should seek advice early for any nail wound.
