What should you know about lifting finger nails?

A fingernail lifts when the plate separates from the nail bed underneath. The detached area may look white because air has entered the space. Frequent hand washing, detergents, solvents, manicures, nail picking, impact, or prolonged moisture may irritate the attachment. Nail fungus and nail psoriasis are also possible causes. A single nail after an injury has a different context from several nails changing gradually.

The loose part cannot be stuck back down. New nail grows from the matrix at the base and gradually pushes the separated section forward. Fingernails grow out over months, and the pace varies between people. Avoiding additional trauma gives the new nail the best chance to remain attached.

Keep the nail short, but clip only the free loose edge and stop if it hurts. Wear gloves when hands will be wet or exposed to cleaning products, dry under the nail gently, and leave the cuticle alone. Avoid scraping, biting, glue, gel overlays, and artificial nails while the nail is separated. A clinician may inspect the nail and nearby skin and may test a sample when fungus or another condition is suspected.

Do not self-treat every lifted nail as fungus: trauma, irritation, and inflammatory nail disease need different approaches. Take a clear photo as the change grows out so you can describe its direction and any new discoloration at an appointment.

Arrange an assessment if lifting spreads to other fingernails, returns repeatedly, or occurs without an obvious reason. Seek prompt care for throbbing pain, swelling, warmth, pus, bleeding, or redness extending beyond the nail fold. A dark streak or patch that persists and does not move toward the fingertip with nail growth also deserves medical review.
