What should you know about lifting tattoo removal?

Laser energy targets tattoo pigment and fragments it into smaller particles. The body's clearance process then gradually removes some of those particles. Professional tattoos may contain several colours and layers at different depths; cosmetic tattoos can also behave differently from decorative ink. A consultation considers the tattoo's colour, location, density, age, previous treatment, and your tendency to develop pigment changes or raised scars.

A clinician may use a Q-Switched Laser or Picosecond Laser depending on the pigment and treatment goals. Do not expect every colour to respond in the same way, and do not cover a recently treated area with makeup until the skin has been given suitable aftercare advice. Protect the area from sun, follow wound-care instructions, and avoid picking blisters or crusts. Tell the clinician about medicines, active skin disease, pregnancy, a history of keloids, and any earlier tattoo-removal reaction.

Contact the treating clinic if redness, swelling, pain, blistering, drainage, or darkening of the skin is worsening rather than settling. Seek prompt medical care for spreading redness, fever, severe pain, facial swelling, or breathing difficulty. A tattoo that changes shape, bleeds without healing, or develops a persistent new lump should be examined rather than assumed to be a treatment reaction.
