What should you know about life after surgical menopause?

Surgical menopause happens when an operation removes both ovaries or otherwise stops ovarian hormone production. Symptoms can begin soon after surgery because the change is abrupt rather than gradual. Hot flushes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, sleep disruption, low sex drive and mood changes may occur, although experiences vary.

Your recovery also depends on the operation, the reason for it, your age, whether the uterus was removed and other health conditions. Vaginal dryness can affect comfort with sex and urinary wellbeing. A vaginal bulge, pressure or trouble emptying the bladder may suggest pelvic organ prolapse and needs an examination rather than being assumed to be part of menopause.

Keep surgical follow-up appointments and ask when walking, lifting, driving, exercise and sex are appropriate. Protect healing wounds as instructed. Record flushes, sleep, mood, vaginal or urinary symptoms and any treatment effects so your clinician can adjust the plan.

Hormone therapy may be suitable for some people after surgical menopause, but the decision depends on the reason for surgery, cancer history, clotting risk, migraines, liver health and which organs remain. Non-hormonal medicines, vaginal treatments, lubricants, talking therapy and practical sleep measures may also be considered. Discuss bone, heart and sexual health as part of longer-term care.

Contact your surgical team for fever, worsening wound pain, redness, discharge, heavy bleeding, difficulty passing urine or increasing abdominal pain. Seek urgent help for sudden breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, one-sided weakness or a swollen painful leg. Arrange review for severe mood changes, persistent insomnia, distressing sexual symptoms or bleeding after menopause.
