Lichen Planus Across the Body: What to Know

The rash may develop in several areas, including the wrists, ankles, legs, trunk, or lower back. Bumps can merge into larger patches, and scratching can leave darker or lighter marks after inflammation settles. The mouth may show white lines or sore red areas; nails may become ridged or fragile. A widespread rash can be uncomfortable and disruptive, but the number of areas alone does not establish the diagnosis. Other rashes can resemble it, so an examination matters.

Record when the rash began, where it spread, and whether itching follows heat, friction, or a new product. Keep showers lukewarm, use a plain moisturiser, and trim nails to limit skin damage from scratching. A dermatologist may use topical corticosteroids on suitable areas. If many sites are involved, oral corticosteroid treatment or another treatment approach may be considered after reviewing your medical history. Do not apply a potent medicine to the face, folds, or mouth unless a clinician has specified how.

Seek prompt medical advice if the rash spreads quickly, becomes very painful, forms extensive blisters, or involves the eyes, mouth, or genitals. A mouth sore that persists, bleeds, or changes needs an examination. Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, inability to drink, or severe eye pain. Bring a list of medicines and skin products, since timing can help the clinician assess possible triggers.
